Summary of Abuse Allegations against Brother Andrew Hewitt:

Brother Jerome “Jerry” Heustis was a member of the Congregation of Christian Brothers religious order. He was ordained in 1957 and served in the Archdiocese of Newark. He served at multiple schools throughout his career and was principal of Essex Catholic High in East Orange. According to media reports, in August 1988, a civil suit was filed alleging that in the fall of 1982, Brother Hewitt sexually abused a freshman boy with emotional problems while he was a student at Essex Catholic High. In April 1989, Brother Hewitt was sentenced to five years probation and inpatient therapy at a treatment center in New Mexico. He died in 2002.

In May 2014, Brother Hewitt’s name was included in the Christian Brothers’ list of “current, former and deceased brothers who were identified in at least two (2) sexual abuse claims filed as proofs of claim in the bankruptcy matter In re: The Christian Brothers’ Institute, et al.”
