Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Brother Hal Ellis:
In 2002, Br. Hal Ellis was accused of child sexual abuse and named as part of a settlement of $7.5 million for two survivors.
According to media reports, two mentally disabled men who said they were sexually abused for years by Jesuits at a Northern California religious retreat are receiving that settlement, Ellis being named as one of the abusers.
Very little is known of Ellis’ activities within the church as the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center has not released any information about Ellis’ assignment history. In addition, information about the age of his alleged victim/victims, the nature of the alleged sexual abuse, or Ellis’ assignments at the time of the alleged abuse is unknown.
In 2002, during the time of the lawsuit, Ellis was living at the Jesuit Center, a retirement home for priests. He was ill and unable to communicate.
