Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Brother Julius F. May:
After taking his final vows to the Society of Mary on July 10, 1928, Brother Julius May taught and was principal of a number of high schools, including in Dayton OH, Hamilton OH, Chester PA, Brooklyn NY, Philadelphia PA, Beacon NY, Covington KY, and Pittsburgh PA. According to media reports, in May 2011, an adult male reported to the Diocese of Pittsburgh that as a student at North Catholic High School during the 1963-1964 school year, he developed a medical condition known as “orchitis,” a form of mumps that settles in the testicles. He stated that Brother May, a school counselor, demanded to conduct a medical examination of his genitals. He refused and left May’s office.
In May 2014, a 66-year-old male reported that he was inappropriately touched by May when he was a student at North Catholic High School during the 1962-1963 school year. He accused May of running his hand up his pant leg. The young man left before May touched his genital area. When he informed the principal of May’s actions, the principal passed off the experience as May “just being friendly.”
The head of Marianist Order apologized in writing to Diocese and students.
May died in 1970 and there is no record where is buried. He was named publicly as accused in a priest profile in the 2018 Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report.
