Summary of Abuse Allegations against Brother Jerome “Jerry” Heustis:

Brother Jerry Heustis was a member of the Congregation of Christian Brothers religious order and served in the Archdiocese of Newark. According to media reports, he was accused of sexually abusing one boy between 1963 and 1967 at Essex Catholic High School in Newark, New Jersey. The alleged victim shot himself in the head and died in 1978 as a result of the abuse. The boy’s cousin, himself, a member of the Christian Brothers later filed a civil suit against the Archdiocese of New York, Newark and the Order alleging child sexual abuse by several brothers in the order.

From 1976 to 1982, Brother Heustis served as principal at Palma High School in Salinas, California for six years, despite the sexual abuse allegations. He died in February 2005.

In February 2012, Brother Heustis was accused of sexually molesting children at Palma High. He was also accused of sexually abusing a minor when he worked at St. Laurence High School in Burbank, Illinois.

In May 2014, Brother Heustis’ name was included in the Christian Brothers’ list of “current, former and deceased brothers who were identified in at least two (2) sexual abuse claims filed as proofs of claim in the bankruptcy matter In re: The Christian Brothers’ Institute, et al.”
