Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father Albert Proud:

According to media reports, in 2002 two men came forward alleging that they were abused by Father Albert Proud. In the spring of that year he was sent to St. Luke’s Institute for treatment.

The Diocese of Syracuse admitted at least one man’s allegations were credible. He was given a face-to-face meeting with Father Proud at St. Luke’s. At the time of the alleged abuse, Father Proud was associate pastor of Christ the King Church in Liverpool. The alleged victim said Father Proud gave him beer and then sexually molested him in a secluded trailer at Selkirk Beach in 1973, when he was a 14-year-old altar boy.

“I want to tell him, as calmly as I can, about my life,” he said. “I want him to know. I want to tell him about the distrust and anger and hate, the whole downward spiral of drugs and alcohol. I was in and out of jail. I was in and out of the nuthouse.”

No criminal charges were filed as the statute of limitations had expired. In 2003, the Diocese of Syracuse permanently removed Father Proud from ministry.

Father Proud’s name appeared publicly on the Diocese of Syracuse’s list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors, published in December 2018.
