Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Edward Eilert:

Fr. Edward Eilert was ordained a priest in 1964 and served in the Archdiocese of Newark. He served in multiple parishes throughout his career. According to media reports, in 2002 the Archdiocese of Newark received an allegation that he sexually abused a teenage girl in the early 1980s, while Eilert was assigned to Our Lady of Lourdes in Mountainside, NJ.  She alleged abuse by two other priests during the same time period as well. Fr. Eilert was suspended pending an internal investigation.

In 2003, the Union County prosecutor announced that it was aware of seven priests who committed sexual abuse of minors – with proof beyond a reasonable doubt – but charges would not be filed against any of them, including Fr. Eilert, due to the expiration of the statute of limitations (or, in other cases, uncooperative witnesses).

Eilert is identified on the Archdiocese of Newark’s February 2019 list of credibly accused priests. All the Archdiocese has disclosed is that Fr. Eilert is the subject of “multiple” credible allegations.  The ages/genders of his victims have not been disclosed, nor have his assignments at the time of the abuse.

Fr. Eilert is currently living at St. John Vianney Residence for Retired Priests in Rutherford, New Jersey. Though he has no faculties to minister, he remains a Roman Catholic priest.
