Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father George Weibel:
Fr. George Weibel was ordained a priest in 1948, and served in multiple parishes in the Archdiocese of Denver. According to media reports, in October 2019, the Colorado Attorney General released a detailed report of a special investigation into the handling of child sexual abuse allegations by Colorado’s three Catholic dioceses. For the first time, Fr. George Weibel was publicly identified as a priest with multiple documented reports of sexual abuse.
In March 2014, the person identified in the Report as Victim #1 reported to the Archdiocese of Denver that she was sexually abused as a 12 year old in a swimming pool at the Glenwood Springs pool. This occurred in approximately 1966, when Weibel was assigned to Nativity of Our Lord in Broomfield.
In 1988, more than two decades before Victim #1’s report, another woman reported to the Archdiocese of Denver that she too was sexually abused by Weibel in a Glenwood Springs pool between 1969 and 1972. Notably, this allegation was not contained in Weibel’s personnel file – investigators found it in another file entirely. It was in the file of a parish priest who took the 1988 report. Therefore, investigators concluded that they cannot say with any degree of certainty that no one reported Weibel before 1969 and that he only has two known victims.
According to the Report, this pattern of burying reports and documents in the Weibel matter “is a good example of a phenomena we saw manifest elsewhere in our review and investigation. Specifically, there was a deeply rooted culture in the Colorado Dioceses that discouraged priests from ‘ruining the careers of their brothers’ by reporting their sexual abuse of children.” The priest who took the 1988 reported admitted he was Weibel’s good friend and could not bring himself to report it to the Chancery.
Weibel died in 2008.
