Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Michael Campanalonga:

Father Michael Campanalonga was ordained to the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Newark in 1962. He served in multiple parishes throughout his career. According to media reports, in May 1996, he was accused of sexually molesting and raping three brothers during the 1960s while assigned St. Anthony in Northvale. The first victim alleged that the abuse happened in their family home, and on a church road trip to California.

After the allegations were brought to the Archdiocese of Newark’s attention in 1993, Father Campanalonga was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation. When he refused to do so, his faculties were removed and he was eventually removed from priesthood.

In 1994, two of the brothers filed civil lawsuits against the Archdiocese of Newark. The cases were dismissed due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.

Father Campanalonga’s name is included on the Archdiocese of Newark’s February 2019 list of credibly accused priests.  According to the Archdiocese, Campanalonga was the subject of “multiple” allegations that it deemed “credible” after internal investigations.

Father Campanalonga is currently living in Naples, Florida. According to the Archdiocese of Newark, he is permanently removed from ministry but has never been laicized.
