Summary of Allegations Against Father Richard Deakin:
According to media reports, Father Deakin started fondling a 13-year-old girl in 1985 and continued to abuse her until 1987. Deakin admitted that by 1986, he was having intercourse with the victim five times per week. The archbishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore is alleged to have had evidence of the abuse, but he did nothing. Deakin was transferred to a parish in Pennsylvania in 1987. The Capuchin order officially dismissed Deakin in 1989 because he married a parishioner. Conflicting media reports claim that he left the priesthood in 1988, married, and became a furniture salesman.
In 1990, Father Richard Deakin was convicted on child abuse and rape charges in Baltimore. A plea bargain gave him five years of probation and a suspended 15-year sentence. He admitted to his crimes and apologized to the victim and to the church. An out-of-court financial settlement was reached in 1993 for the civil case between the victim and the defendants filed in 1992. After serving his sentence, Deakin earned a social worker’s license. As of 2015, he was working with homeless veterans at the Veterans Administration.
Deakin is still living and is believed to be residing in the Ambridge, Pennsylvania, area. He is 63 years old.
