Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Thomas McCarthy:
According to media reports, in August 2003, after meeting with diocesan officials, Father Thomas McCarthy unexpectedly retired. He told parishioners he was retiring due to health problems and because the Bishop wanted to transfer him to a larger parish.
A few weeks later in September 2003, an anonymous flier circulated in the neighborhood around the church where Father Thomas McCarthy served in the 1990’s. The flier urged parents to check with their children to see if they had been abused by Father McCarthy.
In March 2018, Father McCarthy’s name was included in the Diocese of Buffalo’s list of priests who “were removed from ministry, were retired, or left ministry after allegations of sexual abuse of a minor.” No information regarding the allegations was disclosed. As of 2016, Father McCarthy was believed to be living in West Seneca, New York.
In April 2020, he was one of 23 priests removed off of the Diocese of Buffalo’s payroll through an agreement it reached with survivors in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
