Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father William Giblin:

According to media reports, in July 2002, two priests were arrested in a Canadian police sting involving a child prostitution ring. One of the priests arrested was Father William Giblin, who served in the Archdiocese of Newark. He was a former headmaster of Seton Hall Prep and retired pastor of St. Joseph’s Church in East Orange, NJ.

Father Giblin was placed on leave eventually retired shortly thereafter.   Due to a purported lack of evidence, the charges were dropped against him in 2003. However, the other priest with whom Giblin was arrested was later convicted.

Giblin died May of 2011.

Since then, a former Seton Hall Prep student has filed a suit against the deceased priest, claiming abuse by Giblin and another priest in the 1960’s.  Giblin’s name appears on the February 2019 list of credibly accused priests published by the Archdiocese of Newark. According to the Archdiocese, Giblin was the subject of one credible allegation of sexual abuse, but it released no details about the allegation, such as the age/gender of the victim or Giblin’s assignment at the time of the abuse.
