Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Fr. Aldeo Gilbert:

Fr. Aldeo Gilbert was ordained a priest in 1943, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Lafayette. According to media reports, Fr. Gauthe admitted to raping or sodomizing 37 children dating back to 1972 in Broussard. In 1986, he pleaded guilty to 11 counts of child molestation and was sentenced to 20 years in prison but was released a decade early.

In 1992, a woman filed a lawsuit against the Diocese of Baton Rouge alleging that in 1961, Fr. Gilbert choreographed a sexual assault against her by two female parishioners when she was 15 years old. Documents in the lawsuit state that Gilbert organized “vocation clubs” meant to guide girls into becoming nuns. Once in these clubs, the girls were allegedly sexually abused by Fr. Gilbert and adult female club members. The lawsuit was dismissed on statute of limitations.

In another lawsuit filed in 1993, a second woman sued Fr. Gilbert and the Diocese of Lafayette claiming that he sexually abused her as a child.

Father Gilbert was publicly named in April of 2019 on the Diocese of Lafayette’s disclosure list of “diocesan clergy against whom credible allegations have been made regarding sexual abuse of a minor or vulnerable adult.”

He died in 2007.
