Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father C Richard Nowery:

Father C. Richard Nowery was ordained a priest in 1968, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. According to media reports, in  Father C. Richard Nowery was a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross. According to media reports, in 1986, he was accused of sexually abusing two boys in Austin, one that year and one five years earlier in 1981. Both allegations surfaced at the same time. Father Nowery was sent for treatment and returned to ministry but was restricted from unsupervised access to children.

According to media reports, in 1994, he was assigned to Sacred Heart of Jesus where he was made pastor in 1995. Upon review of Father Nowery’s personnel file in 2002, after the church abuse scandal in Boston, the archdiocese removed him from ministry that May. He was the pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus in New Orleans at the time.

Father Nowery died in April 2018. In November 2018, his name appeared publicly on the Archdiocese of New Orleans’ list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. In January 2019, his name was included on the Diocese of Austin’s and the Diocese of Baton Rouge’s lists of clergy credibly accused of child sex abuse. In June 2019, his name appeared on the Congregation of Holy Cross’ list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors.
