Summary of Abuse Allegations against Fr. Charles Bigelin:

Fr. Charles Bigelin was ordained a priest in 1915. According to media reports, in March 2002 the Diocese of Portland and the Maine attorney general’s office received an allegation of child sexual abuse in 1953 against Fr. Bigelin. The alleged abuse occurred in the sacristy of St. Mary’s Church after the 13-year-old boy attended confession with the priest. Fr. Bigelin reportedly asked the victim to unzip his pants. When he refused, the priest attempted to fondle the boy. The victim left the church and avoided Fr. Bigelin after the incident. He suspected that Bigelin abused other minors because he heard that Bigelin would bring orphaned children to the rectory to live with him. He did not tell anyone about the incident until years later when he told his wife.

Fr. Bigelin died in 1962.
