Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Charles Gormly:

In 2014, the Diocese of Duluth included Fr. Gormly on its official list of clergy members who have been credibly accused of child sexual abuse. According to media reports, in May 2015, a woman filed a lawsuit against the Diocese of Duluth, alleging she was sexually abused as a 12-13 year old by Gormly in approximately 1960-1961 while attending St. Francis of Assisi in Brainerd, Minnesota.

Efforts to unseal the secret documents regarding clergy sexual abuse in the Diocese of Duluth and the Diocese of Crookston began with the first lawsuits filed under the Child Victims Act in June 2013.

In October 2015, a jury verdict was handed down against the Diocese of Duluth in a child sexual abuse case. Several documents regarding Gormly were introduced into evidence at the trial, including letters written by the Duluth’s Bishop in 1960 and 1961, stating that Gormly had a history of molesting small girls and that, despite his poor “record in Crookston”, he wanted to give Gormly “one more chance”.

The bishop allowed Gormly to work under him in Duluth from 1960 until 1961, at which time Gormly was removed and sent to a Milwaukee, WI hospital for psychiatric treatment.

Gormly then took a leave of absence from the church until he died in 1968.

Gormly is included on the Diocese of Sacramento list of priests credibly accused of child sexual abuse. In addition, he is included on the Diocese of Cheyenne list and the Diocese of Crookston list.
