Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Donald T Malone:
Fr. Donald T Malone served in multiple parishes in New York. The majority of his ministry was spent at Archbishop Stepinac High School, a prominent, all-boys high school in White Plains, New York. He was a teacher, dean of students, and principal at the school. He was known as “the Count” because he sometimes walked Stepinac’s hallways in a black cape, holding a whip.
According to media reports, in 1979, Malone was arrested for public lewdness and loitering at a rest stop. It was the same year that Cardinal Terence Cooke appointed him principal of Stepinac. The charges were later dropped.
In 1988, Malone was accused of soliciting sex from a young teenage boy in the downtown area of White Plains, NY. The boy’s family did not want to press charges, rather insisted that the priest get counseling and not be allowed to work with children. Police and archdiocese officials agreed and he was immediately removed from his position as principal.
“When he left, there was just a stony silence, a black wall of silence,” a Stepinac former teacher said. “It was wrong, and it created a cynical attitude in the school. When the actions of a priest like Malone are covered up, it does not lead to the education of students, especially the moral education that Catholic schools say they’re big on”. Anyone who had seen Malone wrestling with students in his office probably had a hunch that he had gotten into trouble, he said.
Malone was transferred to three more parishes where he was involved with children before being laicized in 1993. Blessed Sacrament on Staten Island, Holy Family in the Bronx, and St. Patrick’s in Highland Mills, Orange County were the parishes Malone was transferred to from 1989-1992.
In April 2019, Malone’s name appeared on the Archdiocese of New York’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. He lived in a family-owned cottage in the Hamptons before he died in 2012.
