Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father Gus (August) Griffin:

Father Gus (August) Griffin was ordained a priest of the Society of the Divine Word in 1970. According to media reports, in the summer of 2007, he was accused in a lawsuit of sexually abusing a 16-year-old boy in the 1970s at St. Bernard Church in Sunrise, FL. The boy’s parents had asked the priest to counsel their son when they had problems.

Another lawsuit was brought against the Diocese of Rockville Centre for the repeated sexual abuse of an altar boy by Father Griffin at St. Bernard’s church in Levittown, NY. The alleged sexual abuse occurred on church grounds and on different outings with the Father Griffin from 1966-1969. It included fondling, as well as many other sexually deviant acts.

In November 2016, a civil sexual abuse claim was brought against the Archdiocese of Miami and Archbishop Favalora, on behalf of a teen boy alleging he was sexually abused by Father Griffin..

In August 2019, Father Gus (August) Griffin was accused in a lawsuit filed under the NY Child Victims Act, of sexually abusing a 12-year-old altar server at St. Mary’s in East Islip in 1968. He is listed on the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s 2021 List of Clergy Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor. 

Father Griffin’s current whereabouts are unknown.
