Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Herbert J McElroy:
According to media reports, in October 2003, Fr. Herbert J McElroy was named in a civil lawsuit filed involving 24 priests, in which he was accused of sexually abusing an 11- or 12-year-old boy from 1954 through 1955 while serving at St. Mary Magdalene in Springfield Gardens, New York. He was the boy’s basketball coach. Some of the alleged abuse occurred on sports trips.
In October 2017, a settlement was paid out to McElroy’s victim from the IRCP (Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program). In February 2019, his name was included on the Diocese of Brooklyn’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors.
McElroy died in 2004.
