Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Jaime Guzman:

Father Jaime Guzman was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Raleigh. According to media reports, in  was named publicly as accused when the Diocese released a list of clergy accused of sexual abuse of a minor in 2018. Guzman was accused of sexual abuse outside of the diocese. He is also thought to be the same Rev. Jaime Guzman Astaburuaga from the Archdiocese of Santiago and Chile. He was found guilty in 2012 by the Vatican of sexually abusing students at Colegio San Ignacio El Bosque, where he was chaplain from 1984 until 1994.

The Jesuits’ superior general imposed a five-year restriction on Guzman Astaburuaga’s ministry, where he could not celebrate mass publicly, was prohibited from contact with minors, and could not leave his residence without permission from his superior. In June 2017, the restrictions were extended to another five years.

Former students had come forward in 2010 and 2011, having found one another through Facebook. The Jesuits claimed that they had not received complaints about the priest during his years at the school, but one former student stated that he had reported abuse by Guzman 17 years prior. The Jesuits announced on January 31, 2018, that a canonical investigation was to be opened based on new information the order had received against Jaime Guzman Astaburuaga.
