Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father James Benedict:

Father James Benedict was first named publicly as a priest accused of sexual abuse on the Archdiocese of New Orlean’s list in November of 2018. It noted that the allegation was received in 2003, and referred to an incident that occurred in the late 1950’s. The Archdiocese of New Orleans did not include any further information about the nature of the misconduct, or the gender/age of the victim who made the claims against Father Benedict. 

James Benedict died in 1984. 

In April of 2020, the Archdiocese of New Orleans filed for bankruptcy protection. As part of its bankruptcy, the Archdiocese of New Orleans will be reviewing and paying claims for anyone sexually abused by diocesan priests and lay employees.
