Summary of Abuse Allegations against James Welby:

According to media reports, in April 2019, Fr. James Welby’s name appeared on the Archdiocese of New York’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. It was removed in mid-2020, apparently, after it was discovered that Welby, who the Archdiocese previously believed was deceased, was actually still alive and had not been given an opportunity to respond to the allegation before the matter was closed.

According to information provided by an attorney for Welby, the former priest was the subject of an allegation made in the Archdiocese of New York’s Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program (IRCP), where the third-party administrators of the fund determined that the allegation was credible based upon the evidence provided by the alleged victim. The Archdiocese apparently put Welby’s name on its April 2019 list as a result of the IRCP administrators’ determination.

Welby has since contacted the Archdiocese to dispute his inclusion on the list of credibly accused priests. Given that Welby was not provided the opportunity to rebut the allegation at the time, the Archdiocese removed Welby’s name from its list of accused priests in approximately July 2020.
