Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father John Basty:

Father John Basty was first named publicly as accused by the Archdiocese of New Orleans on its list in November of 2018. The allegation against him was noted to have occurred sometime in the 1940’s, and received by the diocese in 1946. 

John Basty died in 1956. No further information has been released about the number of incidents that have been reported, or the nature of the misconduct. 

In April of 2020, the Archdiocese of New Orleans filed for bankruptcy protection. As part of its bankruptcy, the Archdiocese of New Orleans will be reviewing and paying claims for anyone sexually abused by diocesan priests and lay employees. This will likely include claims filed on behalf of anyone whose case may be beyond the statute of limitations.
