Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father John Hurley:
Fr. John Hurley was a priest of the Oregon Province, ordained in 1945. He briefly served in the Diocese of San Jose before spending more than four decades at Gonzaga Preparatory High School in Spokane, Washington. According to media reports, in 2007, his name was included on the Diocese of Spokane list of clergy credibly accused of child sexual abuse. Details of the allegations against him were not provided. Information about the age/gender of his alleged victim/victims or the nature of the alleged sexual abuse is unknown.
In December 2018, the Order announced that the allegations against Hurley were mistakenly connected to him. They were actually against Fr. James P. Hurley. Discrepancies in the list, which led to the “instance of misidentification” may have tarnished the legacy of Fr. John F. Hurley, who worked at the school from 1947 to 1993.
Hurley died in 1998 and has a Gonzaga Prep scholarship fund named after him.
