Father John Hewetson was ordained a Franciscan priest in 1930 and served in the Archdiocese of Newark. He was St. Joseph’s first pastor, and served in multiple parishes throughout his career. According to media reports, in 1968, he took a leave of absence. He retired in 1973 and died in February 1987.
In February 2019, Father Hewetson’s name first appeared publicly on the Diocese of Albany’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. It noted multiple allegations, but did not provide any information on the allegations regarding age/gender of the victims.
