Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father John Hyland:

Father John Hyland was ordained a priest in 1942 and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Charlotte. According to media reports, in May 2002, a woman reported that the priest sexually abused her as a minor from 1964 until 1966. The alleged abuse occurred at St. Pius X Catholic School when she was a student. At the time the abuse is said to have occurred, the school was under the supervision of the Diocese of Charlotte.

In 2018, the Diocese of Charlotte publicly named Father Hyland on its list of clergy credibly accused of the sexual abuse of minors. It also notes that there were “subsequent reports of abuse.” For a clergy member to be listed, the Review Board of the Diocese of Charlotte or another authority determined that the allegation made has a semblance of truth. This list covers the period from 1950 to 2018.

According to media reports, in December 2019, Father Hyland’s name was included on the Diocese of Charlotte’s list of 14 clergy who it says have been credibly accused of child sexual abuse in the nearly 50 years since the diocese was established.

John Hyland retired and has been deceased since 1975.
