Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father John Seery (aka Joseph Seery):

Father John Seery (aka Joseph Seery) was a priest originally from Ennis, Ireland. According to media reports, in 1978, he was accused of sexually abusing a boy while serving at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Parish in Westwego, New Orleans. He was removed from ministry, and while police investigated, he fled to Ireland. He was then placed on special assignment to Knock, Co. Mayo, in preparation for Pope John Paul II’s visit.

According to Father Pat Buckley, who was ordained with Father Seery in Waterford in 1976, new allegations of sexual abuse arose when he moved to a small parish in Connemara. He continued to serve five more parishes in Ireland for another 20 years before being pressured to retire in 1997, at age 44. The process of being laicized began before his death. He died in 2011.

In November 2018, Father John Seery’s name appeared publicly on the Archdiocese of New Orleans’ list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors.
