Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father John Voglio:
Fr. John Voglio was ordained a Salesian priest in 1987. He worked in a Salesian High School and a parish in the Archdiocese of New York. According to media reports, in March 2002, during the New Hampshire Attorney General’s investigation, Voglio was accused of repeated sexual abuse of a 12-year-old boy in 1982 at Camp Don Bosco in New Hampshire where Voglio was a Salesian brother and counselor at the camp. The alleged abuse included fondling and oral sex. Later in 1982, Voglio wrote to the alleged victim from Ohio, saying that he was going to become a priest.
In April 2019, Voglio’s name appeared on the Archdiocese of New York’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. It noted Voglio was removed from ministry and laicized. In 2020, Voglio was included on the Salesians list of clergy accused of child sexual abuse.
Voglio withdrew from the Salesians in 1994. He was removed from ministry in 2002. Prior to his removal. Voglio had priest assignments in Massachusetts, New York, and New Hampshire.
In 2021, the Archdiocese of New York issued a warning about John Voglio in its online bulletin. The Archdiocese noted that “Father” John Voglio has been representing himself as a Catholic priest is supplying burial services for a fee in the Westchester/Bronx area. The Archdiocese explained that Voglio is a former Salesian of Don Bosco who subsequently incardinated into the Archdiocese of New York. The Archdiocese warning noted that Voglio claims to work with a local charity and that funeral homes in the area have been hiring him to perform Catholic burials. However, the Archdiocese of New York explained that in reality Voglio was removed from ministry, laicized and is included in the Archdiocese’s April 26, 2019 list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor. As of March 2022, Voglio has a LinkedIn profile in which he purports to be a “Catholic priest on call” in the New York City area.
As of March 2023, John Voglio, age 65, is the president of Mary F. Clancy Charities, a charity providing scholarships to underprivileged children to received a Catholic education. As president of the charity, Voglio interacts with children and teenagers who attend charity events. In addition to providing scholariships, the chartity reportedly is associated with a food pantry in the Bronx and helped build a children’s playground. Mary F. Clancy Charities was founded by John F. Harrington, another priest accused of sexually abusing a minor in New York. According to David Clohessy, an advocate sexual abuse victims survivor, someone like Voglio should not be running this kind of charity. “Credibly accused child molesting clerics, especially if they’ve been defrocked, belong in no position of power or leadership, especially one that is connected in any way with children,” Clohessy said.
