Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father John W. Broderick:

According to media reports, in 2008, Father John W. Broderick was arrested and charged in with sexually abusing three children between October 2005 and May 2007 in Nicholville, New York. The children were aged 5 to 11, and all from one family. The victims’ parent told investigators Broderick befriended his family and was considered their spiritual adviser.

At the time of his arrest, Broderick was staying at Holy Name of Jesus Academy in Massena, New York. In 2008, his privileges were removed by the Diocese of Syracuse for “incidents unrelated to sexual abuse.” A spokeswoman said Church officials only learned of the allegations from media reports. Yet it also said that Broderick was among 32 priests in the diocese who were removed as part of the adoption of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People in 2002.

In November 2008, Father Broderick sued his accusers, alleging that the family made false statements about him. Father Broderick said the incident was not sexual, nothing more than horseplay, and the accusations sprang from a vendetta against him by the father of the alleged victims. When the story broke, another family came forward and said their son was abused by Father Broderick a couple of years prior.  The suit was dismissed in January 2010.

In February 2009, Broderick was acquitted on two felony charges and found guilty of one charge of child endangerment. In April 2009, the court vacated his conviction.

In August 2018, Father Broderick’s name first appeared publicly on the Diocese of Scranton’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. In November 2018, Father Broderick’s name appeared on the Diocese of Albany’s list. His name appeared publicly on the Diocese of Syracuse’s list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors, published in December 2018.
