Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Joseph Ansaldi:

According to media reports, Fr. Joseph Ansaldi, along with other clergy, was accused in a 2015 lawsuit of allegedly molesting a 13-year-old boy in the 1960s while serving at Mount Loretto on Staten Island. The alleged abuse was reported to the Archdiocese of New York in 2019 and Ansaldi was named on the Archdiocese of New York’s 2019 List of Archdiocesan Clergy Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor or the Subject of Eligible IRCP Compensation Claims.

Ansaldi was accused in another lawsuit of abusing a male student, ages 15-16, in 1984-1985 while he was the principal of St. Joseph by the Sea High School on Staten Island. The suit settled in 2020 in the mid-five figures.

Ansaldi spent over half of his career in the priesthood at St. Joseph by-the-Sea, working as a teacher, assistant principal, and then as principal for 27 years. Ansaldi had previously worked at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, as a history teacher from 1964-1978. In 1990, he was named a Monsignor. In 1991, he was named co-vicar for Staten Island by Cardinal O’Connor. He held that position until 1998.

After reaching the mandatory priest retirement age of 75, Ansaldi served as a chaplain at St. Peter’s Boys High School, New Brighton, and St. Joseph Hill Academy, Arrochar, and as a chapel assistant at Monsignor Farrell High School in Oakwood.

Ansaldi died in 2015 in Staten Island. His status as a priest, whereabouts, and whether he had access to children from 2012 until his death in 2015 is unknown.
