Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Fr. Joseph Buckley:

Fr. Joseph Buckley was ordained to the priesthood in 1932, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Norwich. According to media reports, in 2003 a Connecticut man filed a lawsuit against the Archdiocese of Hartford. The suit alleges that Fr. Joseph Buckley began sexually assaulting the boy when he was 14 years old in 1971. The accuser claims that Buckley gave him soda spiked with alcohol and took him into the shower where he sexually assaulted him. This pattern of abuse continued for four months, and Fr. Buckley frequently gave the accuser money to silence him. The suit was settled as part of the Archdiocese of Hartford’s $22 million sex abuse settlement in 2005.

In May of 2019 the Archdiocese of Hartford publicly named Fr. Buckley on its list of “clergy who have been the object of legal settlements or otherwise credibly accused of sexual abuse of minor from 1953 to present.”

The Diocese of Norwich included Fr. Buckley’s name on its 2019 list of “priests who served in the Diocese of Norwich who had allegations in other places but not it the Diocese of Norwich.”

Fr. Buckley died in 1975.
