Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Placid Hennessey

In December 2021, the Diocese of Scranton added Fr. Placid Hennessey’s name to its list of clergy credibly accused of sexually abusing a minor. Additional details about the nature of the abuse and when it took place are publicly unavailable.

Fr. Hennessey’s assignment history is also unknown, but sources place the priest in New Jersey in the late 1930s. While in New Jersey, Fr. Hennessey supervised the Girls’ Club. According to news reports in 1953, Fr. Placid Hennessey was also noted for his involvement with the Catholic Youth Center (CYC).

According to the Diocese of Scranton, Fr. Placid Hennessey was not a priest in the diocese. He was a Franciscan Friar. Fr. Hennessey died on April 5, 1959.
