Fr. Raymond Melville was ordained a priest in 1982, who served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Portland. According to media reports, in 1990, a man wrote a letter to Bishop Gerry of Portland to report he had been sexually abused from 1980-1985 by Fr. Melville. The alleged abuse began when the victim was a 14-year-old high school student. At the time of the alleged abuse, Fr. Melville was a seminary student assigned to Our Lady of Good Counsel in Locus Point, Maryland. According to media reports, the alleged victim lived with Fr. Melville during the summers of 1983 and 1984 while Melville was assigned to St. Joseph in Lewiston, Maine. Fr. Melville was sent to treatment in the spring of 1990 and was reassigned upon his return.
A Maine man filed a civil lawsuit against Fr. Melville and Bishop Gerry of Portland in 2001. The suit alleges that Melville sexually abused the victim for seven years beginning in 1985 when he was a 13-year-old altar boy at St. Mary in Augusta. According to the alleged victim, Fr. Melville befriended the boy’s parents and spent holidays with the family. In 2004, the Maine Superior Court ordered Melville to pay $500,000 to the victim. The case against Bishop Gerry was dismissed.
In 2002, the Archdiocese of Baltimore publicly named Fr. Raymond Melville on its list of clergy accused of child sexual abuse. Melville’s name appears under the heading “accused priests from other dioceses.
In February of 2007, a Maine man filed a lawsuit against Fr. Raymond Melville and the Diocese of Portland. According to the victim, Fr. Melville sexually abused him for three years beginning in 1986 when he was 12 years old. The alleged abuse occurred at St. Mary’s School and at a camp owned by Melville in central Maine. The victim filed a second suit against four of Fr. Melville’s superiors in November 2007 alleging that they failed to protect him from Melville. In 2008, a judge ordered Fr. Melville to pay $4.2 million in damages to the victim. The suits against the Diocese of Portland and Melville’s superiors were eventually dismissed.
