Father Robert Eric Guglielmone

Diocese of Rockville Centre

Ordained: 1978

Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father Robert Eric Guglielmone:

Father Robert Eric Guglielmone was ordained a priest in 1978. He was named bishop of Charleston, South Carolina in 2009.  According to media reports, in August 2019, he was accused in a lawsuit filed under the NY Child Victims Act, of sexually abusing an 8-year-old boy from 1978 to 1979. He was assigned to St. Martin of Tours in Amityville, NY, in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. It was his first priestly ministry after ordination.

According to the Diocese of Charleston, the accusation was initially determined not to be credible, despite being reported to the police. Upon reviewing the allegation, the Vatican was informed and initiated a full investigation. According to media reports, Father Guglielmone denied the allegations, and said the Vatican cleared him of any wrongdoing. He claimed he received a letter from the Roman Catholic Church headquarters stating it had determined the sexual abuse allegation against the priest “has no semblance of truth and is thus unfounded.” In December 2020, he submitted a letter of resignation to Pope Francis on his 75th birthday.
