Father Roger Carlin

Diocese of Burlington

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Roger Carlin:

In July 2021, the Diocese of Burlington was sued by a man who alleges that he was sexually abused by Fr. Roger Carlin.

According to media reports, the man, who is now in his 60s, says that Carlin sexually abused him at St. John Vianney parish in South Burlington.  The abuse occured in the mid-1960s when the man was just 9 years old.

In a statement to reporters, the Diocese of Burlington claimed that this was the first allegation to be made against Carlin, a common refrain from spokespeople when a priest has not been publicly accused before.  Carlin’s name was not included in a 2019 report of clergy accused of sexual abuse in the Diocese of Burlington.

Carlin’s personnel file will likely be turned over as part of the litigation, during a phase of the case called discovery.

Carlin died in 1980, according to the Diocese of Burlington.
