Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father Steven Peterson:

Father Steven Peterson was ordained a priest  in 1973. He served in Suffolk County for 35 years including lengthy periods at St. Joseph’s in Babylon and St. Mary’s in East Islip. According to media reports, in April 2019, he voluntarily left the ministry pending the investigation of an allegation that he sexually abused a child more than 40 years ago. The Diocese of Rockville Centre received the allegation through their Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program.

In August 2019, Father Peterson was accused in a lawsuit filed under the NY Child Victims Act, of sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy from 1972 to 1978, at Good Shepherd in Holbrook, St. Joseph’s in Ronkonkoma. The alleged abuse occurred during counseling and visits to a juvenile detention center, where the boy was living. His current whereabouts are unknown.
