Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Theodore Lelieveld

In September 2019, the Diocese of Alexandria added Fr. Theodore Lelieveld to its list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor. According to the diocese, Fr. Lelieveld reportedly abused male minors in the mid-1960s. The diocese added Fr. Lelieveld’s name after an allegation was brought to its attention in August of 2019.

The Permanent Review Board, which evaluates all allegations of clerical sexual misconduct involving minors, reviewed the evidence and determined the allegation was credible in September 2019. Further details about the nature and scope of the abuse, however, are not publicly available.

Ordained July 25, 1957, Fr. Theodore Lelieveld moved to the Diocese of Alexandria in 1958. According to news reports, Fr. Lelieveld served for approximately 20 years before he was shot twice in the chest one evening at church. Fr. Lelieveld died October 21, 1976.
