The Diocese of Trenton named Fr. Thomas A Rittenhouse on a list of priests credibly accused of child sexual abuse published in February 2019. The Diocese of Trenton indicated that Rittenhouse was the subject of one credible allegation, but did not provide any additional details, such as the age/gender of the victim or Rittenhouse’s assignment at the time of the abuse.

In January 2021, Rittenhouse was accused of sexually abusing a minor while assigned to Holy Cross Church in Rumson, New Jersey from 1981 to 1982. The details of the sexual abuse allegations, including the victim’s age/gender, are unknown.

According to media reports, Rittenhouse left Rumson, NJ in 1988 for St. Anthony of Padua in Hightstown, where he stayed for about a year. He retired roughly three times between 1996 and 2002 and took a leave of absence in 1997 from an unknown congregation.

Rittenhouse died in 2006 in good standing as a priest. According to Diocese files, Rittenhouse once reported a priest, Fr. Paul Hurley, for inappropriate conduct with teenage boys in the early 1990s.
