Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father William Cody Bressler

In December 2018, the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City publicly named Fr. William Cody Bressler on its list of Allegations of Clergy Sexual Abuse of Minors. According to the list, while a visiting priest at the Sacred Heart Parish in 1955, Fr. Bressler allegedly put his hands up the legs of a minor. The Diocese of Alexandria later identified Fr. Bressler in its 2019 list, as well.

According to sources, the Permanent Review Board—which reviews allegations of clerical abuse of minors to determine credibility—reviewed multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against Fr. Bressler in 2004 and again in 2005. The allegations documented abuses against both male and female minors in the 1960s. The Permanent Review Board deemed the allegations credible, and in 2006 and 2017, settlements were made with the victims.

Fr. Bessler was ordained on June 11, 1949, and died in 1990.
