Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father William Logan:
According to media reports, in January 2006, a woman came forward alleging that Father William Logan repeatedly sexually abused her while he worked at St. James in Seaford, New York in the early 1980s. The alleged abuse involved hour-long embraces and warnings not to tell her parents. A mother at St. James reportedly spoke several times to Auxiliary Bishop James J. Daly about Father Logan’s “sick and demented” actions with girls in Seaford, but no action was taken by the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Bishop Daly denied the conversations happened.
Father Logan denied all allegations. In March 2006, he was removed from ministry. One day later, another woman accused Father Logan of child sexual abuse while he worked at St. Lawrence the Martyr in Sayville, New York in the early 1970s. She alleged that he kissed and touched her inappropriately.
In response to one accuser’s face-to-face confrontation, Father Logan said, “I guess I look back on that now, in light of what we’ve been through as a church and what all of us have experienced, and I would acknowledge to you that I think that was a mistake. That was a gross mistake. I think that what seemed an expression of warmth or comforting was, in retrospect, absolutely inappropriate.”
In September 2006, Father Logan was reinstated to ministry after a review board could not substantiate the complaints. In December 2006, he was named in a civil suit filed by the original complainant accusing him of “inducing and seducing” the alleged victim into a “nonconsensual sexual relationship and improper sexual contact.” According to the suit, the priest would take the 13-year old out of class to empty basement stairwells to have her sit on his lap or hold her in hour-long embraces. The suit also accused the diocesan child protection director of “psychotherapy and psychology malpractice” and “assault and battery” at a February 2006 meeting.
In February 2007, a third woman accused him of sexually abusing her as a child while he worked at St. Lawrence the Martyr in Sayville, New York. He allegedly pulled her out of confirmation class and had her sit on his lap in a stairwell in the early 1980s.
“At times he would hold me and [become physically aroused] and not let go,” said the woman.
She and another accuser filed criminal complaints later that month.
Father Logan’s name is listed on the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s 2021 List of Clergy Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor. He is believed to currently be living in Long Beach, New York.
