Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Fr. George Gensler:

Fr. George Gensler was ordained a priest in 1970, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. According to media reports, he was first named publicly as a priest accused of sexual abuse by the Diocese of Baton Rouge in early 2019. This list includes names of clergy members who have credible allegations of sexual abuse of one or more minors or vulnerable adults which allegedly occurred within the Diocese of Baton Rouge after its formation in 1961.

Described as a “priest-cop,” Gensler was a police officer in New Orleans before he was ordained. Three years after he joined the Diocese of Baton Rouge, he was sworn in as an officer for the Lafayette Police Department. He also served as an FBI Chaplain for the FBI New Orleans Office.

There are several allegations of sexual misconduct against Gensler. Abuse was reported in February 1994; October 2018; February 5, 2020; and February 7, 2020. The alleged abuse occurred in late 70’s while Gensler was assigned to St. Anthony of Padua in Darrow, LA. After the first allegation of abuse in 1994, Gensler was placed on leave and permanently removed from ministry. No further information has been released about the age/gender of the accusers or the number of victims who have come forward.

Fr. George Gensler died in 2016.
