Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Michael Scaringe:
In July of 2020, several lawsuits were filed under the Child Victims Act in State Supreme Court in Albany. Two complaints named Michael Scaringe, a registered sex offender from Cohoes. The claims included alleged sexual abuse that occurred in the 1970s at St. Helen and St. Paul the Apostle in Schenectady, NY. Scaringe was a music teacher at both schools and went by the name Michael Josephson.
In 1996, Scaringe was acquitted of sexually abusing a child at Bay Point Middle School in St. Petersburg, FL.
The original complaint against Scaringe was made in 2012, and he was eventually convicted of sexually abusing a child at the Saranac Lake Youth Center in the Adirondacks, where he was the director at the time. At his criminal trial, several survivors testified that Scaringe had sexually abused them as minors when he was a music teacher in the Tupper Lakes School District.
According to media reports, Scaringe was convicted of second-degree rape, second-degree sexual abuse, and endangering the welfare of a child following a six-day jury trial in June. He was sentenced to a 7-year sentence and will be released on June 12th, 2019.
He is a registered sex offender and currently resides in Cohoes, NY.
