Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Msgr. Gregory Vaughan:

On March 30, 2019, the Diocese of Trenton announced that it removed Msgr. Gregory Vaughan from his position as pastor of St. Catharine in Holmdel, New Jersey following an allegation of sexual abuse.

According to media reports, the allegation dated to the late 1970s and early 1980s when Vaughan was assigned as an assistant pastor at St. Ann in Keansburg, NJ.

The allegation was received on March 17, but Vaughan remained in ministry while the Diocese conducted its internal investigation. The Diocese of Trenton has since determined that the allegation is “credible”.  According to the Diocese of Trenton’s internal policies, this is the designation given to an allegation that its internal review board has determined more than likely occurred as alleged.

The local prosecutor confirmed that it was aware of the allegation, but could not pursue any criminal charges against Vaughan as the statute of limitations has already expired. Vaughan reportedly denied the allegation.

The Diocese of Trenton has reported the allegation to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome, the office responsible for determining if a priest should be entitled to a Church trial before laicization.

During the course of his career, Vaughan held several important diocesan positions, including Vicar General, the position that is effectively the Bishop’s right hand overseeing the daily affairs of the Diocese of Trenton.

Furthermore, Vaughan was named on the Diocese of Trenton list of clergy credibly accused of child sexual abuse.

Vaughan’s current location while his case works its way through the CDF is unknown.
