Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father John T Meehan:
According to media reports, in 2018, Msgr. John T Meehan was accused of repeatedly sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy in the early 1980s for two years at Cardinal Hayes High in the Bronx, New York, an all-boys Catholic school, where he had worked as a guidance counselor. Meehan was removed from ministry in 2018. The allegation was found to be credible and substantiated by the Archdiocesan Review Board. His accuser received a cash settlement as part of the Archdiocese of New York Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program (IRCP). The victim’s case was not prosecuted because the statute of limitations had run out.
“The brave survivors who report crimes perpetrated on them make children of today safer and allow those still suffering in silence to know they are not alone,” the victim’s lawyer said.
Canonical processes regarding McMeehan’s abuse are pending. In April 2019, his name appeared on the Archdiocese of New York’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. His current whereabouts are unknown.
