Diocese of Rockville Centre

Ordained: Unknown

Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Priest L:

In 2003, the Suffolk County Grand Jury released a report of accusations made against 23 Roman Catholic priests in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. The priests, whose names were omitted, were identified only by letters in the report. According to the report, the identity of Priest L is believed to be unknown.

The report stated that this priest was accused of sexually abusing 3 out of 4 brothers. The 4th brother committed killed himself before it could be determined if he had also been abused.

“The brothers who were abused by this priest came to refer to themselves as the ‘Forgotten Four.’ They were a large family, seven boys, and one girl. Their mother thought of Priest L as her, ‘the eighth son’.”

The surviving brothers reported the abuse to the diocese. They were offered little more than counseling by diocesan officials. After years of frustration, grief, and angry letter writing, a settlement was finally reached with the remaining 3 brothers for $65,000 each.
