Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Daniel Maio:

Father Daniel Maio was ordained a priest in 1960, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Pueblo. According to media reports, a civil suit filed in 2010 against the Diocese of Pueblo alleged that he abused a 15-year-old boy between 1968-1969 while Maio was serving as the youth director for the Diocese of Pueblo. A second suit was filed a month later with allegations very similar to the first suit against Maio.

The allegations state that Maio gave the victim and other children alcohol and marijuana, then played strip poker with them. Maio would then fondle the victim and simulate sexual intercourse, eventually progressive to oral sex and sodomy.

The abuse mainly occurred in Maio’s at St. Patrick’s parish in Pueblo. On at least one occasion, one victim says he was also sexually abused at a mountain cabin owned by then-Bishop Charles Buswell.

Both suits were settled in 2011 with unknown terms.

According to media reports, in October 2019, the Colorado Attorney General released a detailed report of a special investigation into the handling of child sexual abuse allegations by Colorado’s three Catholic dioceses.  For the first time, Fr. Maio was publicly identified as a priest with a documented report of sexual abuse.

Maio died in 2006 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
