Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Lawrence McTavey:

In November of 2020, Fr. Lawrence McTavey was added to the Diocese of Albany’s list of Clergy Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor. The decision comes after the Albany Diocesan Review Board hired an investigator to examine the allegations against McTavey that were made in 2018. They concluded that there was “reasonable cause” to believe that the allegations were credible.

At the time of his death in 2019, McTavey was on administrative leave due to allegations that were reported in 2018. During his 52-year career with the diocese, McTavey had four allegations of sexually abusing children that were reported in 2002, 2005, and twice in 2019.

According to the Diocese of Albany, all four complaints detailed sexual abuse between 1964 and 1974 when McTavey worked at Cardinal McCloskey Memorial High School. One of the victims also alleged abuse at St. Bernard’s parish rectory in Cohoes. McTavey worked at the high school from 1958 until 1972, first as vice principal and guidance counselor and later as principal.
