Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Fr. Charles “Charley” Coyle :

Fr. Charles “Charley” Coyle was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1965, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Shreveport. According to media reports, in April 2002, he was officially sued for the alleged abuse of a boy in the 1970’s at Newton High School in Boston. Reports were also made that a second youth was living with Charles Coyle at the time and later died by taking his own life. Coyle was working as a guidance and drug counselor at the time. Coyle was working in New Orleans when the accusations were first made public. The Archdiocese of New Orleans immediately placed him on leave.

A second lawsuit was filed against Charles Coyle in 2003 of alleged abuse dating to when Coyle was a seminarian in Baltimore in the 1960s. It was later omitted from the 2011 Boston AD database. No further information has been released about the alleged timeframe of the abuse or the number of victims who have come forward.

In 2018, the Archdiocese of New Orleans publicly named Fr. Coyle on its clergy report regarding abuse under the heading “religious order priests were taken out of ministry by the Archbishop of New Orleans in 2002, even though the abuse was not alleged to have occurred in the Archdiocese of New Orleans.”

The Jesuits Central and Southern Province included Fr. Coyle’s name on its 2018 list of Jesuits with credible accusations of sexual abuse of a minor. The list notes more than one allegation.

In December 2018, the Diocese of Shreveport named Fr. Coyle on its credibly accused list under the heading, “Jesuits removed for sexual abuse of minors: priests who served in the Diocese of Shreveport.”

Fr. Coyle’s name appears on the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s list of “priests and brothers accused of child sexual abuse,” which was published in 2019.

The Archdiocese of Atlanta included Fr. Coyle’s name on its list of “religious order priests with credible allegations outside the Archdiocese of Atlanta” in November of 2020.

Charles Coyle died in July 2015.
