Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Francis Boyle:
After serving more than 60 years in the priesthood with prominent positions with the Archdiocese of New York, Fr. Francis Boyle was removed from ministry in 2018 due to sexual abuse allegations that surfaced, one year after his retirement.
Boyle was named on the Archdiocese of New York’s 2019 List of Archdiocesan Clergy Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor or the Subject of Eligible IRCP Compensation Claims. The details of the sexual abuse allegations, including when and where the abuse occurred, are unknown.
Despite the fact that the Archbishop of New York and the Archdiocese of New York’s lay review board determined that the allegation was credible, the Vatican overturned the finding in September 2020, claiming it “did not have the semblance of truth”. The Archdiocese was ordered by the Vatican to take steps to “take whatever steps are needed to restore his good name,” according to media reports.
Boyle died in March 2021. His name remains on the Archdiocese of New York’s list of credibly accused priests.
