Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Brother John Moniz:
Br. John Moniz was a Jesuit Brother in San Jose, California. He was arrested on a child molestation charge in 1994. According to media reports, prior to arresting him, the police didn’t have enough evidence to move forward with his arrest when the initial report was received of allegedly forcing a then-4-year-old girl to fondle him as they took a walk at St. Mary’s Church.
However, in 1995, Moniz was convicted of sexual misconduct with a young girl that took place in 1991. He was sentenced to 3 years of probation which ended in 1998. He was ordered to pay for the victim’s uninsured medical expenses and psychological treatment.
During the time of the abuse, Moniz was living at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, California. There were other priests living there that were also convicted of abuse.
In 2018, Moniz was included on the Jesuits West Province list named as being credibly accused of child sex abuse. It notes an allegation of sexual abuse reported in 1995 of abuse that took place in 1991.
Moniz died in 2008.
