Summary of Abuse Allegations against Monsignor Joseph Gambino:

Monsignor Joseph Gambino was from Turin, Italy. Ordained a priest in 1903, he arrived in the Diocese of Buffalo in 1907. He was the pastor of Holy Cross for 54 years, before he retired in 1968. He died in 1975.

According to media reports, in August 2019, Monsignor Gambino was named in a lawsuit filed under the NY Child Victims Act. The suit alleges that he repeatedly molested a 5-year-old boy when he was an elementary student at Holy Cross Church from 1948 to 1949. The boy was reportedly brought to Monsignor Gambino’s office by a nun “presumably for disciplinary reasons”. The alleged abuse occurred in the rectory, sacristy and other secluded areas. Monsignor Gambino “admonished” the boy not to tell anyone,  that it would be a “sin,” and threatened that if he did, it would affect his record and grades.
